Are Bark Leads Worth It? Costs, Credits and Alternatives

Bark leads can be worth it for businesses that reply within minutes, sell jobs with a healthy margin and track their cost per won job. They are rarely worth it for firms that cannot respond quickly, because several professionals see the same request and you pay for the lead whether or not the customer replies. Bark is flexible and easy to test, which is its biggest strength.
This guide explains how Bark credits work, what a lead costs in 2026, the rules on expiry and refunds, the honest pros and cons, and the alternatives, including the leads already sitting in your CRM.
At a glance
- Bark charges in credits. The published list price is £1.80 plus VAT per credit (as reported by Whito, checked July 2026)
- Third-party reports put a lead at roughly 5 to 20+ credits depending on job size, around £7 to £40+ plus VAT
- Up to about five professionals can contact the same customer
- Credits bought on or after 1 November 2025 expire after three months
- Bark works best as a test channel for firms that reply fast and follow up properly
How do Bark leads work?
A customer posts a request on Bark, Bark matches it to professionals in that service and area, and each professional decides whether to spend credits to unlock the customer's details and contact them. You pay to make contact, not to win the job.
Each request shows a credit price that depends on the type and size of the job. Once you unlock it, you can call, email or message the customer through Bark. Whito reports that up to about five professionals can respond to the same request, and sometimes more. The customer then chooses who to speak to, often based on who replied first and who looked most credible.
Bark operates in the UK, the US and other countries, with prices in local currency. The figures below are UK figures. If you are in the US, check the credit price shown inside your own Bark account.
How much do Bark leads cost in 2026?
A Bark lead in the UK typically costs between about £7 and £40+ plus VAT, depending on the job, based on a list price of £1.80 plus VAT per credit. Bark does not publish credit costs for every service, so most of the per-lead figures come from third-party reports.
Whito checked Bark's pricing on 28 July 2026. We opened that research on 22 October 2026. Its figures:
| Item | Figure | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Price per credit (list) | £1.80 + VAT | Published |
| Price per credit (bigger packs) | Roughly £1.20 to £1.50 + VAT | Estimate |
| Small jobs (cleaning, repairs) | 5 to 8 credits, about £7 to £14 + VAT | Third-party reported |
| Mid jobs (plumbing, electrical) | 8 to 15 credits, about £14 to £22 + VAT | Third-party reported |
| Large jobs (rewires, extensions) | 15 to 20+ credits, about £22 to £40+ + VAT | Third-party reported |
| Elite Pro subscription | Roughly £20 to £30 a month | Reported, not published |
| Credit expiry | Three months for credits bought on or after 1 November 2025 | Published |
| Professionals per lead | Up to about five, sometimes more | Partly published |
Pack sizes and prices are shown inside a professional account rather than on a public page, so check the current price in your own dashboard before you buy.
Do Bark credits expire, and can you get a refund?
Yes, Bark credits now expire. Whito reports that credits bought on or after 1 November 2025 expire three months after purchase, down from twelve months, and that unused credits are not refunded.
On refunds, Whito says Bark may return credits, not cash, at its discretion if you ask within 14 days. It also says a customer not answering, or hiring someone else, does not qualify. In practice, that means the main risk on every lead sits with you: if the customer goes quiet, the credits are spent.
How do you work out whether Bark leads are worth it?
Work out your cost per won job: total spent on credits in a period divided by jobs won from Bark in that period. If that number sits comfortably below your margin on an average job, Bark is paying.
Here is the arithmetic for one illustrative lead price. It is a worked example, not a prediction for your business.
| Lead price | Win 1 in 5 | Win 1 in 10 | Win 1 in 20 |
|---|---|---|---|
| £20 + VAT | £100 per job | £200 per job | £400 per job |
| £30 + VAT | £150 per job | £300 per job | £600 per job |
| £40 + VAT | £200 per job | £400 per job | £800 per job |
The win rate is the number that moves everything, and you control a lot of it through how quickly and how well you respond. Whito notes that no UK platform publishes win rates, so track yours from day one: request, credits spent, contacted, quoted, won, value.
What are the pros of Bark?
Bark's main advantage is flexibility: there is no minimum term, you choose which leads to pay for, and you can start or stop in days.
- Pay as you go. No annual contract, unlike some directories.
- You pick the leads. You can skip requests that are too small, too far away or outside your services.
- Fast to test. Useful for trying a new area or service before committing a bigger budget.
- Wide range of services. Bark covers far more than trades, so it can suit niche or mixed services.
What are the cons of Bark?
The main drawbacks are shared leads, paying for contact rather than results, and the three-month credit expiry. Each one makes response speed and follow-up more important.
- Shared leads. Several professionals can contact the same customer, so the first credible reply usually wins.
- Paying for silence. If the customer does not answer, the credits are still spent.
- Mixed intent. Some requests come from people comparing prices or gathering ideas.
- Expiring credits. Buying a big pack to get a lower price only helps if you use it within three months.
Who are Bark leads worth it for?
Bark suits businesses that can reply within minutes, have margin to absorb a few lost leads and want a flexible way to test demand. It suits slower teams and very low-margin jobs less well.
If you sell high-value home improvement work such as windows, kitchens or solar, Bark can add enquiries, but it is worth comparing its cost per won job with Google Ads and directories on the same basis. Our UK home improvement cost per lead guide does that by channel.
What are the alternatives to Bark?
The main alternatives are other lead platforms, your own paid search and social ads, and the old leads already in your CRM. Each has a different cost model.
| Option | How you pay | Shared? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bark | Credits per lead | Up to about 5 | No minimum term, credits expire in 3 months |
| Checkatrade | Monthly membership, some lead fees | Reportedly 3 to 5 in busy areas | 12-month term reported |
| Rated People | Subscription or lead fees | Maximum 3 (published) | Unlimited plan priced on application |
| MyBuilder | Fee when shortlisted | Several shortlisted | Reported £2 to £35 for typical jobs |
| Google Ads | Per click | No | Leads are yours alone |
| Old leads in your CRM | With Setterly, per booked appointment | No | Free to start, no setup fee, no retainer |
Platform figures are from Whito's July 2026 research. We look at Checkatrade on its own in is Checkatrade worth it, and compare platforms with reactivation in Checkatrade, Bark or your own old leads.
How do you get more from the Bark leads you have already paid for?
Reply first, follow up more than once and go back to old Bark leads later. You have already paid for those customers' details, so every extra conversation lowers your cost per won job.
A Harvard Business Review study, reported by SmartCompany, found firms that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited an hour longer. On a shared platform, an hour can be the difference between a conversation and a customer who has already booked someone else.
- Turn on notifications and reply in minutes during working hours.
- Personalise the first message to what they asked for, not a generic pitch.
- Follow up by phone and text over several days, not once.
- Log every lead in your CRM so it does not disappear when the Bark thread goes quiet.
- Go back after a few months. People who did not book in spring often still need the job in autumn.
That last step is lead reactivation. Because they are the same leads Bark already sent you, their quality is set by Bark, not by the reactivation. Setterly runs it by two-way SMS: an AI holds the conversation and books the people who are ready. It is free to start and you pay per booked appointment, with no setup fee and no retainer, and CRM integration is optional for a one-off fee. Before texting old leads, check how you collected their details against the ICO's guidance on the soft opt-in. Our lead reactivation page explains how it works.
Home improvement businesses have used this on their own old enquiries. A UK blinds company saw 66% of 736 old leads reply, with 51 appointments and £122,400 in pipeline. A UK solar installer saw 50% of 563 reply, with 28 appointments and £224,000 in pipeline. Pipeline means appointments booked multiplied by average order value. These are past results, not a forecast.
Are Bark leads worth it? The verdict
Bark leads are worth it if you reply fast, follow up well and your tracked cost per won job sits below your margin. Treat it as a flexible test channel, measure it honestly, and keep the leads you buy working for you long after the first conversation.
